Tango Extraño
How to capture the impression of tango, but with our own signature? Renewed version, with strings.
Romance Cue
An original intro; segue to the romance cue from Fahrenheit 451 - Bernard Herrmann's film score in waltz time. (I tracked down Herrmann's hand-written studio notes).
Romance Language
A play on words, as my dad taught medieval French. Opens with a piano flourish and has several contrasting sections, making use of Piazzolla-inspired rhythms.
Invitation
Bronislaw Kaper's 1952 film noir theme is now a standard. We pass the haunting melody around to all instruments.
Bachianas Brasileiras
From Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos' famous suite. Originally scored (1938) for soprano + 8 celli, our arrangement, like the MJQ version, uses vibraphone.
Oblivion
Our arrangement of Piazzolla classic, with tenor saxophone taking the melody.
Milonga de Buenos Aires
Argentine orquesta leader Francisco Canaro's popular milonga 2-step.
Triunfal
Classic made famous by Argentine orquesta director Hanibal Troilo. We follow the original.
Beyond All Time
Ralph Carmichael was one of the best Hollywood arrangers. He always insisted on "more strings!" and eventually recorded this with a 100-member orchestra.
Tango Nights
Original waltz starts out in the major, but an unexpected twist goes to the iv minor chord.
Parallels
A progression is first set out in long tones at the electric piano. The implied melody leads to a waltz section with flute and piano, ending with the original theme.
Natural Affection
My arrangement of some incidental music, using two contrasting themes, by the leader (now departed this world) of the Modern Jazz Quartet, John Lewis.
Castellón
Several themes convey impressions of Castellón De La Plana, Spain. Vibraphone section recalls church bells.
La Vi Llegar
Memorable tango dance piece by the orquesta Hanibal Troilo. Our own coda, half time, in classic tango rhythm. The original was done in 1944.
D'Accord
This piece winds its way among themes and sub-themes, featuring the accordion.
Vuelvo al Sur
Our arrangement of the nostalgic Piazzolla classic; the yearning for the land of the south.
Uno
Our arrangement of tango classic recorded notably by the Troilo orqesta and vocalist Alberto Marino circa 1943.
Les Nuits de Montreal
Our arrangement of tango moderno piece.
Recuerdos
Not tango - Bolero! Adaptation of piece by Brasilian singer Martiño, who recorded in Spanish. We followed closely the lovely intro arranged by orqesta leader Pocho Per...
